The brain-health supplement category is crowded, and not every product discloses what you're actually paying for. Here's how to check ingredient transparency, and how to read reviews with a critical, informed eye.
What "proprietary blend" actually means
When a label lists a "proprietary blend" with a total weight but no individual ingredient amounts, you genuinely cannot tell whether you're getting a meaningful dose of each component or mostly filler with a trace amount of the active ingredients. This isn't automatically dishonest — but it does limit how well you, or anyone, can evaluate the product.
What a transparent label looks like
- Individual ingredient amounts listed, not just a total blend weight
- Amounts that align with research — if a clinical study used 300mg of an ingredient and the label lists 50mg, that's worth noticing
- Clear sourcing — where relevant, standardized extracts (a specific percentage of active compound) rather than vague "extract"
- An honest disclaimer — appropriately cautious language rather than disease-cure claims
How to read reviews honestly
Online reviews for supplements are a genuinely mixed bag, and a few patterns are worth knowing:
- Extremely polished, uniform "Verified Purchase" reviews with similar phrasing across many entries are a soft red flag
- A complete absence of any negative reviews is unusual for any real product and worth some skepticism
- Reviews mentioning specific, plausible details (how long they used it, what else changed in their routine) tend to be more genuine than vague superlatives
- Third-party, independent review sites (not hosted by the brand itself) are generally more reliable than testimonials on the product's own page
Red flags worth knowing
- Claims to "cure," "reverse," or "treat" any diagnosed condition, including Alzheimer's or dementia
- Manufactured urgency ("only X left," countdown timers that reset)
- Endorsements attributed to specific public figures or institutions without a verifiable source
- A guarantee that's hard to find, or terms that don't match the badge shown at checkout
